Business WiFi Installation in Pittsburgh: A Case Study

A 60-person specialty manufacturer near the Strip District called us after their third "the Wi-Fi is down again" week in a row. Barcode scanners on the shop floor kept dropping mid-pick. Sales reps on Teams calls in the front office got booted every time they walked to the coffee machine. And the "guest" SSID, it turned out, was on the same flat network as the ERP server. They had eight consumer-grade access points bought over five years, no controller, and no map of what covered what.

They did not need a bigger internet pipe. They needed a real business WiFi installation in Pittsburgh, designed for their building, their devices, and their compliance exposure, not a pile of stand-alone APs.

The challenge

The site was a 34,000 sq ft mixed-use building: poured-concrete production floor, a mezzanine of offices, and a small shipping bay. Three problems stacked on top of each other.

First, coverage was guessed, not measured. APs had been mounted wherever there was a free ceiling tile, which meant strong signal above the break room and nothing usable behind the CNC line. Second, the APs were from three different vendors and none of them shared a controller, so a laptop walking from reception to the mezzanine had to fully re-authenticate at each hop, which is why Teams calls died. Third, the guest network was a security incident waiting to be written up: no VLAN, no client isolation, and the shared PSK had been the same since 2021.

A network that "works at the desk" is not the same as a network that works while people move, and that difference is where most Pittsburgh SMB Wi-Fi projects quietly fail.

How it was solved

We started with a predictive site survey using the building's actual floor plan, wall materials, and a device inventory (scanners, laptops, VoIP handsets, a handful of IoT sensors on the production line). That produced an AP count and placement map, not a guess. We followed it with an on-site validation survey once cabling was pulled, because concrete and metal racking never behave the way software predicts.

The design landed on Wi-Fi 6E access points with a cloud-managed controller, four SSIDs mapped to four VLANs (corporate, production/scanners, VoIP, guest), 802.1X for corporate devices, and a captive portal with client isolation and bandwidth caps for guests. New Cat6A drops replaced two runs that were failing PoE budget. Firewall rules were rewritten so the guest VLAN could reach the internet and nothing else, and the production VLAN could only reach the ERP and MES hosts it actually needed.

Because the customer is chasing defense-sector work, we also documented the wireless controls against the CMMC practice families they will be assessed on, so the same install does double duty when the auditor shows up.

Who this business WiFi installation approach is for

The client got a one-page network diagram and a controls mapping they took directly into their CMMC prep work. Total elapsed time from survey to sign-off was under six weeks, most of which was waiting on cabling and hardware, not configuration.
