Evil twin access points. An attacker stands up a network named identically to the venue's — "PIT-Airport-Free" — with a stronger signal near your seat. Your laptop, which remembers the SSID from a previous visit, may auto-associate. Now every DNS query and any non-HSTS request flows through their box.
Captive portal abuse. The splash page you click through can push fake certificate prompts, redirect you to spoofed login pages for Microsoft 365, or drop drive-by payloads on unpatched browsers.
Session token theft via lookalike domains. Attackers pair a hostile hotspot with a phishing lure — a domain one character off from your bank or SaaS vendor — and harvest the session cookie, not the password. MFA does not stop this.
Device-to-device discovery. On a flat guest network, your laptop can see — and be seen by — every other guest's device, including whatever is unpatched, malware-ridden, or actively scanning.
The threat on public Wi-Fi is not someone reading your packets — it is your device trusting a network that lies to it.
How to stay safe on public Wi-Fi: the practical checklist
Here is what actually moves the needle, in rough order of impact.
TL;DR: A properly configured business laptop with always-on VPN, encrypted DNS, current patches, and disabled auto-join is safer on hotel Wi-Fi than an unmanaged personal laptop is on your home network.
Start by turning off auto-join for any network you do not personally own. On Windows, remove "Connect automatically" from remembered public SSIDs; on macOS, uncheck "Auto-Join" in the Wi-Fi advanced settings. This alone kills the evil-twin scenario.
Next, use a business-grade always-on VPN — not a consumer app you installed yourself. It should connect before the user logs in, fail closed if the tunnel drops, and route DNS through the tunnel. Split-tunnel configurations that leak DNS to the local network defeat the whole point.
Enable encrypted DNS (DoH or DoT) at the OS level as a backstop, so even outside the VPN your name resolution is not being answered by the hotspot. Keep the OS and browser fully patched — the majority of drive-by exploits on captive portals target browsers that are one or two versions behind. Disable file sharing, AirDrop to "Contacts Only" or off, and set the network profile to "Public" so Windows firewall tightens inbound rules.
When the network feels wrong — unexpected certificate warnings, a captive portal that redirects oddly, a prompt to install a "network certificate" — stop. Tether to your phone's hotspot instead. LTE and 5G are, for practical purposes, safer than any public Wi-Fi you did not build yourself.
